Music Programming

Kathleen Sloan and Blind Lemming Chiffon

We are thrilled that Denvention 3 has added Kathy Mar as Special Music Guest, and that could mean anything from a fantastic don't-miss-it concert to roadkill bunnies and renegade hallway filks.

Expect the usual and the unusual. There will be panels, big concerts, small concerts, theme circles, workshops, events and all-night singing. As far as the unusual, some of the items suggested, but still in the maybe stages, have been a tour of Blind Lemming's mansion, drive-by filking, a Hobbit's Second Breakfast, moving The Bash to Denver, and arranging for a group of filkers to invade one of the area's many open-mike nights.

We want you to email us with comments and suggestions. The main filk area will be at the Sheraton. We plan to have musical events and programming in other areas as well.

The works of Lois McMaster Bujold have inspired quite a number of people to write songs, and we are planning a concert featuring some of the best of those songs, including many of Lois's favorites. Filks about her many worlds range from touching and beautiful to inspiring to downright funny.

If you don't know what filk is, or if this is your first convention, come to the Filk 101 panel and learn all about it. Other panels we're working on include Singing In Filk Circles, Filk 202 (Intermediate Filking), Filk 499 (Advanced Filking), and Online Music and Filk Resources for Computer Inept Smart People. There will be other workshops on songwriting, playing various instruments, and even our own Blind Lemming Chiffon will lead a workshop on how to become a multi-instrumentalist. Another special item in the works is an encore performance of Brenda Sutton's operetta based on Tanya Huff's story "Choice of Ending."

We are planning events centered around our Music Guest, including such things as a Kathy Mar Parody Circle, A "My Favorite Sings" Panel (Kathy Mar chooses her favorite songs and performers for us to enjoy), and a discussion of the Dandelion Conspiracy. Kathy will also be leading workshops in performance skills, both vocal and guitar.

We still want your ideas and can use more volunteers. If you'd like to be on a panel, perform in a concert or lead a workshop or circle, please register as a program participant, and also send us e-mail at filk@denvention.org to help us with our planning. We want your e-mails with comments suggestions and program ideas.
