The intent of this site is to provide a central repository for as much material about Science Fiction in general, and Science Fiction Fandom in particular, as we possible can, and to make that material available to all interested persons in an easily accessed form. Your comments are a great help to us in understanding how well we are carrying out that intent and your suggestions help us to improve our efforts.

Thank you -- Fanac Webmaster.

Comments:My wife and I have subscribed to and read science fiction magazines since @1971. Still do. Analog and F&SF pretty much the whole time, but various issues and years of If, Galaxy, Omni, Asimov's, etc. We still have @ 98% of the magazines. Now retired, we have to consider physical space limits and the fact that these mags, much as we've enjoyed them, aren't doing us or anyone else any good. We really don't want to sell them or throw them away. We'd like them to end up in the hands of someone or something (preferably nonprofit) who will get some use and pleasure from them. Can you suggest any organizations that would possibly accept these magazines free? Thanks. - Jay Lounsbury

Comments:Art Rapp was my Dad; I'm just amazed how much of his Spacewarp zine has migrated to the internet! It is a pleasant experience, to find that much of the effort my parents put into their passion for Sci-Fi has survived into the digital age. Just the fact that I can sit here on the living room sofa in a farmhouse miles from the nearest town, years after they are gone, and pluck something they mimeoed in 1950 out of the thin air on an electronic tablet sitting on my lap seems like the type of improbable futuristic alien technology they might only have dreamed and written of way back then. Back when I was a kid, I just assumed that ours was the only house that had an odor of mimeo ink, piles of long blue wax paper stencils, and stacks of paper drying around the living room every month. Thanks for taking the time to preserve their life's work!

Comments:Can you believe I just got around to looking you guys up. I am a fan although I was more active 30 years or more ago. I went to the North AmeriCon in, wooo, late 1970s in Louisville, KY. Wrote some reviews back then for a fanzine, man what was it, by editor Geis, maybe just the Science Fiction Review magazine? Amongst my hobbies now: ham radio/KB9GIE, photography, short story writing, nothing published yet in paper or for pay but a story at http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/studestories.asp, my first writing effort written a couple of years ago. I listen to the MUFON Net at 3.777 MHZ frequently although i am not a UFO believer. UFOs and SF were strongly related in my mind as a young man. Otherwise, mythology is a good explanation for about everything. We just like to sit around the camp TV, errrr, campfire and tell stories, I think. I've known Barry Childs for many years here at Indianapolis, IN. He and his wife are both huge in fandom and Filk singing. Anyhow, I look forward to checking out the site in the future and especially in the idea that ham radio and SF are related in some strong manner. Thanks, Larry W. Mitchell

Comments:My wife and I drove Judy's mother to the hospital the night of her birth. Like Judy, I, too, was attracted to Science Fiction early on. I began with "Amazing Stories," the oft-spoken of but seldom actually seen novels that appeared in the 1930s and 1940s. Much, much later I became an avid Star Trek viewer; and in 1986 I had the pleasure of employing Bill Shatner to reprise his Captain James T. Kirk role in a commercial video written and filmed to present the Nova Metropolitan District (a USAF Consolidated Space Operations Center logistical support development located in Colorado Springs) for which I won an American Advertising Federation first prize / commercial video division. But, I digress, like Judy — and many of you, too — I am a writer; none in a fiction genre, however, science or otherwise. I have two books in the U.S. Library of Congress: The Control of Police Discretion (1964) and Feudalism in Colonial America: A Survey, 1999. My wife and I hope to have the pleasure of visiting Judy's parents in West Palm Beach in the near future.

I will unearth and upload them when I have a chance. I was 15 at the time and a Pittsburgh resident. It was quite an experience for me, as I got to meet folks like Robert Heinlein, Lester Del Rey, Isaac Asimov, Frederick Pohl, E.E. 'Doc' Smith, Harlan Ellison and many others. If anyone out there still has a copy of the souvenier photo book they put out afterwards, I would be interested in talking to you about it.

I've been out of fandom for a few years due to an extended illness and the development of our new kind of theme park with a strong fannish oriented theme and really missed a lot of my old friends, acquaintences, annoyances, and other panel participants. I also would like to mention that we should all work to wipe out cancer in our lifetime, we lose far too many good people far too soon. It can be done, it must be done. (This is why we used to do the Monty-Pie-A-Thon at cons, to raise funds for cancer research. Thanks to all who pied me.)

Comments:As I mentioned in a separate e-mail to Mr. Siclari, upon learning of the death of Julius Schwartz and recognizing several names of individuals mentioned in his obit, and the fact that he lived in the Bronx (where my father was born and raised) I did a Web search for the first time under my father's name, ALLEN GLASSER. He died in 1971. He was a great sci-fi fan, an early advocate of science fiction being recognized as literature (I will check at home for a short article I may have that he wrote on this subject, in case you are interested let me know), and very much involved, he told me and my brother, in something called "sci-fi fanzines." I was so honored to find his article on the Scienceers included on your site as being "exceptionally good or of importance." He was a vain man who so wanted to be a famous writer himself but it eluded him. To know that you have recognized his writing this way.... I idolize Ray Bradbury, who lives in my community; I suddenly feel closer to him, as if by some long thin strange thread we are now somehow connected, because my father knew men he knew, and my father championed the works of such writers as Bradbury. Thank you again for including my father, for rescuing him--even in death--from the obscurity he so feared he'd be mired in, and for giving voice to so many other pioneering devotees like him.

You can remove the question marks (unless they are an inside joke). I'm 100% + that the photo is not Edward D. Wood Jr. ¶ Another bit of trivial observation on my part. Though I have the greatest respect for Tim Burton (But, as we all know, "Ed Wood" is packed with non-historical scenes – as are most Hollywood bios) and Paul Marco (who said it was Lugosi - and he ‘was' there), the 'Octopus wrestling match', at the end of “Bride of the Monster/Atom,” is NOT Bela Lugosi but rather his stand in. Inspect Lugosi's stuntman's make-up. The scene where Lobo is pushed over the medical table is the best for viewing. It just ain't Lugosi shakin' that 8opus. ¶ Well, anywho, if you would like a free laugh - check-out my #1 Mp3.com parody song

I wrote this book primarily for science fantasy/science fiction fans. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who reads the book...or...who knows of a fanzine devoted to A. E. van Vogt. I am thinking of starting a van Vogt/general semantics fanzine. Comments will be welcome.

Comments:Anyone who might want to contact me (far from likely!) change that .com to .net & you *should* get thru. i'm tired of all the PornBotSPAM resulting from signing GuestBooks...

Mainly i'm just expressing my *gratefulness* for this availability of "Classic" fanzines on line -- & especially to people like Judy Bemis for all that time so magnanimously spent typing them *in*! (i've recently typped Thomas Carlyle's essay, "Novalis" onto the computer to eventually put up on COSMIC WIND -- & realize how much effort *that* required -- plus the proof-reading, afterwards -- all of which makes me more grateful than i might've *thot* to have been, otherwise.)

When i run *across* a few old fanzines in my collection, here -- *if* i can find the time -- i'll type them in for your archives & send them along by way of a bit more substantial "Thank You" for everything you're making accessible for old *fan*addicts like yrs. truly.

The first science fiction magazine i bought (new) was the May 1957 issue of IMAGINATIVE TALES. That & IMAGINATION became my *immediate* favorites (at age 15, 16) -- &, of course, Robert Bloch's fanzine review column was running in Madge -- which made me aware of the existence of fandom years before i was able to afford to try any zines out.

Going backwards in time (picking up back issues of sf magazines) 1952 became my *next* "favorite year" amongst the prozines (with the Jan. thru March issues of STARTLING STORIES & the Jan. 1952 issue of PLANET STORIES) -- & back issues of IMAGINATION -- 1952 probably being its *best* year... And of course *there* Mari Wolf's "Fandora's Box" was running fanzine reviews of *that* particular vintage. Many an issue of many a fanzine that she reviewed i certainly *longed* to have the opportunity to *read* them (those half a dozen to a dozen years later when i acquired that particular back issue of Madge) -- & then i discover -- on this WebSite -- 3 issues of RHODOMAGNETIC DIGEST & an issue of COSMAG actually available to *be* read -- from 1952! -- not to mention zines going back into the 40's & 30's like Julius Swartz's FANTASY MAGAZINE!

i find myself with the opportunity to read things i never *dreamed* i'd have an opportunity to read!

This is *truly* a splendid thing to be happening!

It would be super-keen, of course, if *every* issue of Schwartz's FANTASY MAGAZINE were to eventually go up on-line!

i've *also* longed, for years, for the opportunity to read an issue or so of Bill Hamling's fanzine (late 30's? early 40's?) -- before he began writing for Ziff-Davis & eventually got onto the editorial staff.

It was *definitely* interesting to read a piece by Sam Moskowitz written at about age 15 in HELIOS #1 -- & comments on Jim Blish at that time!

*Now* if we could only cross the Alternities into alternate timelines & pull in some of those issues of MADGE & TALES & such that were published *after* those prozines ceased publication in our particular timeline! i've *acquired* a few of them, in my dreams, but was unable to "bring them across" into the Waking World!

Thank you *again*!

~~just an old fan who's had no association with the fanzine scene for about 2 & a half decades... i guess, sorta like X. J. Kennedy (Joe Kennedy when he was a letterhack in the old PLANET STORIES, etc. -- back when Marion Zimmer was a fan) my Major Interests have gone elsewhere; but i maintain a fondness for the old enthusiasms, too -- & am at the age where i go Backwards In Time, reading-wise, frequently... It's just that re-reading the Gnostic scriptures, reading minor works by Lord Byron... trying to get thru all of Sri Aurobindo... picking up on John Burroughs, Loren Eiseley & William Irwin Thompson (& suchlike) have become far more interesting than the next fan*politics & some of that old pulp*krap (or wasting time with L. Ron Hubbard's last big spurt of appears-to-be-dreck). But, how could i pass up the latest Somtow Sucharitkul or *not* plunge into Peter Hamilton -- or deny myself the sheer *joy* of rereading Poul Anderson, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Thomas Burnett Swann, C. L. Moore, H. Rider Haggard, Dwight V. Swain -- or resist checking into Charles de Lint & Robert Holdstock!

Comments:OK, I admit it. I checked to see if my own name was listed anywhere. And, by god, there -were- a few entries in the cross-reference. Not bad, considering I've been pretty much gafiated from fanzine fandom for about sixteen years.

What got me looking around here was cleaning out piles of mundane belongings from the library/garage earlier today, and recovering access to the boxes of old fanzines that have been unreachable for years. I -may- actually be able to get them organized (and maybe even --gasp!-- shelved!) again later this year.

Comments:keep up the great work. good to see someone trying to do a fan history. been to the mythopoeic society page and they seem to have blocked out entirely the 1967 to 1980's completely. They don't even mention Glen Goodknight anymore!!!!! Which is just horrible. No one there can tell you what happened to the group. i left it in 1976 and there appears to be a total mental block on their memories.

i have waited for years to find fandom again, and at least to have fandom online is wonderful.

thank you.

Guy lands on planet, peaceful, low tech people there. He teaches them all about civilization, their society crumbles because of it, and they end up crucifying him.
Any ideas on this one? Drop me a line.

The story won the top prize in the latest Writers of the Future contest and appeared in Writers of the Future Vol. XV. Please pass along this offer to the rest of the club. Anyone who is interested can e-mail me for a copy, or check out my website for more information about me.

Other Campbell candidates are listed at www.sff.net/campbell-awards
Any supporting or attending member of this year's or last year's Worldcon is eligible to nominate for the Campbells. I urge everyone to participate, even if you aren't voting for me, because turnout is usually low for this award. Thanks for your consideration, and I hope to see you in Chicago.

Best wishes,

Comments:No suggestions at this time, and I am too busy today to dip into what appears to be a cornucopia of wonderfulness. But I wonder if anybody knows if there is a listing, anywhere, of current APAs? I would like to update any listings of LASFAPA (which I am again running). Also, does anybody know of any general interest APA which would be amenable to merging with another general interest APA? Like all APAs, LASFAPA is smaller than it used to be (although we are still healthy and I get the disties out on time), so there is a possiblity that combining a couple of smallish APAs into a larger unit can keep this fannish endeavour going longe
