GENERAL NEWS

EOIN COLFER, author of the ARTEMIS FOWL series for YA readers has 
been commissioned to write a new instalment of THE HITCH HIKERS GUIDE 
TO THE GALAXY to be released next year. This will be the 6th book in 
the Hitch-hikers "Trillogy", arriving 9 years after the last in the 
sequence, Mostly Harmless, was published. And 8 years after the death 
of the series' original author, Douglas Adams. Adams's widow, Jane 
Belson, is said to be "delighted" that the HHG series will continue. 
The book has the working title of "And Another Thing", and continues

DR WHO (spin-off) fans will be pleased to hear that Nickelodeon has 
confirmed it has picked up the rights to The Sarah Jane Adventures. 
The show will premiere Friday October 31 at 7pm.

RESISTANCE is a new science fiction action-adventure film, with a 
planned follow-on television series to be shot in Australia. It is 
the story of a covert attempt by aliens from outer space to take over 
the Earth, and a guerilla-style battle to stop them when most of the 
world won't believe the threat exists. A band of super-smart 
teenagers at the centre of this conflict have to save the world while 
also dealing with school, hormones and dating. Production on the 
Resistance feature is expected to start later this year. See

THE PAUL HAINES CANCER TREATMENT APPEAL: At last reading of 
girliejones live journal site, the Pail Haines appeal had raised 
$24,600 - well over target! The Art That Scares You auction also 
raised over $4,000 for the appeal. Congratulations on a job well done 
to all those who organised and participated in this appeal. 

The fundraising continues in Melbourne with the Knock one back at 
the Metropolitan Hotel (William St, Melbourne) from 7pm, Thurs, 
October 23rd and help Paul Haines knock cancer on the head. The night 
will feature live entertainment by Corrupted Funk and New Zealand

RUSSELL BLACKFORD has a 15,000 word entry on American Science Fiction 
included in the new four-volume, "Books and Beyond: The Greenwood 
Encyclopedia of New American Reading" to be published in October by 
Greenwood Press. Russell also wrote the entry on Australian Science 
Fiction that appeared in the Camden House Companion to Australian 
Literature Since 1900, as well as the entry on Science Fiction in 
the on-line Literary Encyclopedia. 

CONGRATULATIONS to Richard Newsome whose book, The Billionaire' s 
Curse won the inaugural Text Publishing Young Adult Writing Prize of 
$10,000.

submissions. All considered work is now via invite or professional

HATCH, MATCH & DISPATCH:

SERIOUSLY ILL: Melbourne fan and ANZAPA member, CLIVE NEWALL was 
diagnosed with idiopathic pulminory fibrosis about three years ago. 
It is a degenerative disease with no known cause or cure. Drugs 
slowed its progress for over two years but the only solution is a 
double lung transplant. Clive's condition has deteriorated to the 
point where his doctors do not think he will survive an operation. He 
was recently in intensive care in a weak but stable condition. Only a 
dramatic improvement in his health would allow him to be eligible for 
a transplant operation. (reported by his partner, LynC) 

BIRTHS:
EMMA HAWKES safely delivered a baby girl (known on Emma's blog page 
as "Pearl") into the world on 13th May. Mother and Bub doing well, 
despite a few dramas along the way.
