I am in agreement with much of what your letter had to say concerning my
"crusade" against what I fervently believe are the more conservative, anti-
intellectual elements of fandom. What is surprising, however, is the rather
incessant strain of McCarthyism which emanated from various writers -- the very
strain against which I picketed in Berkeley as a member of the Young People's
Socialist League (Norman Thomas Chapter), have written against in fan
magazines, etc. So, I doubt that I shall write any more articles (in the near
future, at least) on anti-intellectualism in fandom; rather, my output will be
entirely critiques of science-fiction works. //GOOD// For example: the
rather ostentatiously smug Ted White, according to many writers, (whom I do not
have the liberty to cite) has a rather exaggerated view of his own importance.
His jazz reviews are rarely of any use to those of us who follow jazz, and,
more importantly, his science fiction is mediocre trash. Unfortunately no-one
has said this -- yet. I am in the process of organising an article on his
recent Ace novel, Android Avenger. Considering White's recent condemnation of
Judith Merrill's admirable attempts at intellectual critiques, I think this
article should show that White is an inept plebian.
