Fanspace

The ConJosé Hospitality Division needs your junk

We ask people to bring in empty/clean:

  • beer cans
  • milk cartons (especially pint and half-pint sizes)
  • shoe boxes
  • toilet paper tubes
  • and the like…

Why?

Hospitality will be running mini "Junkyard Wars" challenges each day in Fanspace. Fans (like you) will build structures and devices (a different wacky challenge each day) out of the assorted junk we'll provide — and some of your junk might show up in the winning … thing!

What else is happening in Fanspace?

Morning tea and coffee, thanks to SCIFI, the Southern California Institute of Fan Interests. An afternoon tea party, hosted by Strange Horizons. Comfy sofas. The morning newspapers. Not silly enough for you? How about a Paper Doll Masquerade? Domino Fall? Group Juggling? Face Painting, Labyrinth walking, a fannish Scrabble tournament? Balloon Animals. And — a couple of really strange things to do with paper cups…

Fanspace will also have tables for chess/checkers/cards/Mafia and other games of your choice. We'll have magnetic poetry, jigsaw puzzles, a Speaker's Corner (and we want speakers!) and a Cartoonists' Jam (ditto on the cartoonists!).

(And we're not even going to discuss the nap corral or peculiar inflatable stuff at this time…)

OK, we have your interest (we hope). But — these things won't run as well without your help and participation. If you're interested in being involved in any of this, write to us. Or, talk to us. (Or, at the very least, just bring in the junk!)

How much junk?

Even a few pieces of junk valuable building materials tucked into the corners of your luggage are likely to come in handy. If you're bringing more than 1-2 grocery bags full, please drop us a confirming note first. Remember the keywords: empty and clean!

Where?

Fanspace is what we're calling the concourses in the Convention Center. It's the space between the programming rooms and the exhibit halls. We'll have a drop off spot for the junk next to the inflatables check-in station starting Wednesday afternoon. Registration is nearby, so you can drop off your stuff at Fanspace before or after you pick up your badge and registration materials.

Thanks! (And we hope you make Fanspace your own space…)
