What is Fandom?

Fandom is a collective name for science fiction fans. It is not an official organization. It is just a group of friends with a common interest. But it is a very big group of friends that spreads across the entire world. You didn't know that you had that many friends, did you? Thousands of them will be at ConJosé. Why not come along and meet them?

Also we should not forget that most of the professionals in the science fiction field are themselves fans of the genre. (If they were just interested in making money they would have become lawyers instead, or at least be writing Danielle Steele style novels.) After attending the first ever Worldcon, held in New York in 1939, Isaac Asimov wrote:

"For one short golden day, we inhabited a tiny world in which science fiction was the exclusive interest. I imagine Heaven must be a feeble imitation of that date."

We can't promise Heaven, but we can promise an opportunity for fans from all over the world, and from all aspects of the genre, to get together. We can also promise five days instead of one.
